A Curiosity Cabinet Inspired Custom Order

Updated: Jun 11, 2018

Hi there everyone! I was recently contacted to make a "dark" junk journal in the vein of Penny Dreadful or a cabinet of curiosities. I was more than up for this order. *Warning: this is going to be a little photo heavy!*

My "dark" side is kind of where all of the junk journal stuff started for me. I used to make stickers, tags and bookmarks with only skulls, skeletons, apothecary labels, etc. I wanted to use stickers in my journals and I didn't want the cute stuff that was available every where else at the time. I stopped making them because I had to hand cut most of them. I used vintage images and my experience with the cutting machines was not very good. The edges of the images were not clear enough for the laser to pick up.

After talking with the customer, I had so many ideas running through my head, I couldn't go to sleep at night. I finally was able to bring it to life this past week. The back and spine are covered in a rich black velvet (boy is it hard to get all the lint and thread off of that!). I incorporated skeleton keys, Edgar Allan Poe, skeletons, pockets, etc, etc. I was still able to work a few sari silk pieces in there because they look like they may have come from a beautiful silk Victorian dress. There are also a few damask designs, reminiscent of Victorian wallpaper.

It measures 8.5 x 11 inches (full letter size) with 200 pages of tea stained papers and dozens of full page writing papers, folded and incorporated within. Oh, and even a few botanical prints by request.

I hope you enjoyed seeing this special request!

Michelle
